Fundraising tech/notes/Draft:Documentation overhaul

From mediawiki.org

Draft possible outline

[edit]

Second draft

[edit]

What's new

[edit]

Here's an updated proposal for topics and subtopcis for FR-Tech documentation. It's a based on the previous version (retained below) and discussion from this ticket. The main changes are:

  • Two new top-level sections have been added: Libraries (with only SmashPig as the main subtopic, though it could potentially also mention and link to other libraries we contribute to) and Dev tools (previously lumped together with Team processes).
  • Names of top-level sections have been improved, following discussion.
  • Important considerations from the team discussion have been included in the "Notes" column.
  • Subtopics within each top-level section have been re-ordered, and a few have moved to different top-level sections.

Topic codes in the second draft use lower-case letters to distinguish them from the codes for the first draft.

General considerations

[edit]

Each top-level topic (External-facing, Internal-facing, etc.) would have its own summary page, with links to pages for subtopics as needed. (In some cases, however, the subtopics might not need there own page, and in other cases, the subtopics might need to be broken down into pages with subsubtopics.)

In the outline below, details of some large subtopics haven't been filled out (for example, Fundraising/Internal-facing/CiviCRM and Fundraising/External-facing/Payments).

When appropriate, we might standardize subsubtopic organization. (For example, Roadmap or Running tests locally might be appropriate subsubtopics in several places.)

Topics that can only be documented on a private wiki should be located using a similar structure on that wiki, if possible.

Outline

[edit]
Topic Code Notes
Fundraising [x] This is the main entry point for documentation for FR-Tech engineers, and base prefix for our documentation on the public wiki. It would contain a general introduction and short summaries of all the top-level topics listed below, with links to the main pages for those topics. At the bottom, we'd include an index of all subpages under the Fundraising prefix.
Fundraising/External-facing [a] This is a large topic, and there are a few possible ways of grouping the subtopics. In the team discussion, we considered breaking it down into two top-level topics, using topic names more descriptive of actual function. The summary page here should at least describe functions and explain similarities and differences among subtopics, and should probably group them accordingly, too. (For example: only some of the sites described here are implemented using Mediawiki. Also, some are public pages in the donation flow, while others are tools outside that flow.)
Fundraising/External-facing/Payments [a1] We will also maintain an extension page for DonationInterface on mediawiki.org. Subsubtopics that might be covered here, or explained on that page, include: config variables, yaml config files, form translations, form variants, unit tests, separation of concenrs with SmashPig, roadmap, running tests locally.
Fundraising/External-facing/Donate wiki [a2]
Fundraising/External-facing/Foundation site [a3]
Fundraising/External-facing/Foundation wiki [a4]
Fundraising/External-facing/Banners [a5]
Fundraising/External-facing/Portal [a6]
Fundraising/External-facing/Mobile apps [a7]
Fundraising/External-facing/Thank-you wiki [a8]
Fundraising/External-facing/E-mails - Full documentation of our systems for sending e-mails should probably go under CiviCRM or Data and flow. However, since e-mail contents are technically external-facing, we could, for completeness, just mention them here, and link to the full documentation.
Fundraising/External-facing/E-mail preferences [a9] Unlike most other subtopics, this is a public tool, but is not part of the donation flow.
Fundraising/External-facing/Privatebin [a10] Unlike most other subtopics, this is a public tool, but is not part of the donation flow.
Fundraising/External-facing/Public stats [a11] Unlike most other subtopics, this is a public tool, but is not part of the donation flow.
Fundraising/External-facing/IPN listeners - IPN listeners will not be documented here, but for completeness, we could just mention them here and link to the full documentation.
Fundraising/Internal-facing [b] There was quite a lot of team discussion about whether the name of this topic is clear or appropriate. In the summary text, we should clarify that "internal" means "access restricted to FR-Tech and Advancement staff". We could revise the name as we go.
Fundraising/Internal-facing/CiviCRM [b1] Possible subsubtopics: uses by Advancement, extensions, relationship with upstream, data exports, unit tests, separation of concerns with SmashPig, roadmap, running tests locally. Some documentation about our custom CiviCRM systems could also go under Data and flow. There's also tons of great upstream CiviCRM documentation online, so we should link there, too, when appropriate.
Fundraising/Internal-facing/Superset [b2]
Fundraising/Libraries [c]
Fundraising/Libraries/SmashPig [c1]
Fundraising/Service providers [d] Providers to mention: Acoustic, PSPs, Minfraud, Maxmind geolocation, currency rates provider, matching-gift-employer-info provider, Google Docs spreadsheets, Zendesk, external platforms (Facebook, Google Search, TikTok) where we run ads soliciting donations

First draft

[edit]

Below is a proposal for topics and subtopics for Fundraising Tech documentation. Topics and subtopics have codes, which are linked to brainstormed topics and the review of existing documentation, below.

In terms of on-wiki layout, subtopics below could be included in the same page as a general topic, or could have separate pages, depending on their length and complexity.

This outline should be seen as a work in progress. Some topics have been filled out in more detail than others, and it seems certain that some will be expanded or re-organized as we go.

The general logic here is:

  • Main starting point, with general overviews and links to more specific overviews and technical details [X]
  • Explanations of all the different systems involved in donation and donor processes, with technical details that are intrinsic to each system/area [A], [B], [C], [D]
