Media viewer consultation
Hi, I realise it's been ages since the consultation, but I wanted to respond to what you asked at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Multimedia/About_Media_Viewer/Archive03#Nice_feature.2C_lots_of_room_for_improvement
As pointed out by Scott, the purpose of the demo is to show a blurry preview which, when you click "Load", is replaced with a high-resolution image that loads slowly from top to bottom.
Obviously the Media Viewer would not require you to click anything and would simply start loading the high-res one straight away, but the point is this. The current media viewer shows only the low-res thumbnail until the high-res image finishes loading completely. My demo overlays the partially loaded high-res image on top, so that you can see the progress very clearly and also see the top part of the high-res image before the rest is finished, to decide if you even want to wait for it.

@Romanski: Thanks for clarifying! I was unsure what you meant because "progressive loading" is usually used for interlaced images and not for top-to-bottom rendering (even though technically that is also progressive).
I agree what you describe is superior - that is actually how we originally planned the feature but never got around to finish it. The difference from the current look is fairly small so making the placeholder and the eventual image different elements never got priority. (Patches are welcome :-)
I was sure we had a bug about this but I can't find any so I opened bug 71553 about it. --Tgr (WMF) (talk) 14:03, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
