GSoC / OPW IRC AllHands this week
Hi, you are invited to the GSoC / OPW IRC AllHands meeting on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 15:00 UTC (8:30pm IST, 8am PDT) at #wikimedia-office. We have done our best finding a time that works decently in as many timezones as possibles. Please confirm at qgilwikimedia.org so I can add you to the calendar invitation and I have your preferred email for other occasions. If you can't make it's fine, but let me know as well. We have left a notice to all students, but your help is welcome making sure yours is aware about it. Thank you!--Qgil (talk) 20:24, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
Can you update the page to say whether you're using that tool or not? --Nemo 07:58, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
Hi, can you update the table by adding ContentTranslation? --Nemo 11:21, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
- I can try if I knew which table that is :) --Runa Bhattacharjee (talk) 12:06, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
- Developers/Maintainers#MediaWiki extensions deployed by WMF is fine, there is no strict definition of "deployed" for the purposes of that table. --Nemo 12:48, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
CX and itwiki
Hi, I think you are one of the "boss" of the CX project, am I right? It is possible we are going to interact probably very soon because of CX and I really would like to ask you some general information about the future development of the tool, just to have an idea. Do you mind?
I start with a presentation of myself: I am a user who has helped to organize the "discussion page" about possible bug correction or improvement on itwiki here: it:Discussioni aiuto:Content Translation. The goal is to discuss a little bit before posting anything on Talk:Content translation.
So far with Elitre we have also prepared a message for some users who we think are a good target (autopatrolled and very active transaltors). I hope we can send it soon to every user talk.
In any case, these are local details. Can I pose you some question about the "global" picture?--Alexmar983 (talk) 23:58, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
- Hello Alexmar983, Thank you for your note and very nice to meet you. I am indeed part of the team and I handle communication and operational management. You are most welcome to let me know any questions that you may have. We will be happy to discuss about CX plans and also any other feedback.
- I understand you wrote the User Guide in Italian and we are thankful for it. The discussion page on itwiki is a very good idea. Although we would not mind at all if you posted to Talk:Content translation directly, but we understand that having a separate page is convenient for itwiki users. At any point during the discussions if you need any help from us please let us know. You can ping me and I can direct the question to the appropriate person in the team. For the next 3 months (i.e July-September 2015), we will be using the CX6 phabricator project for planning purposes. You can also find updated information from this workboard.
- Hope this helps and please let me know if I can help when you start the interactions with other translators via the message as suggested by Erica. Thank you.--Runa Bhattacharjee 06:24, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
- I am a user who translated the help page from frwiki, yes. Than the help page is going to evolve with other contribution,
- We discussed about having two separate "bug pages", we agreed that we just can't ask users to post directly on the general talk page here. For example one of the problem was about wikidata. The first day it didn't work, but now it does. If I had posted directly, it would have been a waste of time. Many users are also very itwiki oriented, they don't like the meta level such as wikimedia and meta... that's why we offered them one local page and we took in charge to work as a link if needed.
- So, thanks for your time. My first question for you is about a general long-term development. I am an expert in connectivity. "navbox" templates are quite standard in many languages, when will be possible to translate them directly in the template namespace? We are in a ns-0 phase right now, what is "the plan" about other namespaces?--Alexmar983 (talk) 10:09, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
- Hello again. We already have this on our roadmap (see ticket) but how soon we can actually make this happen is a little hard to guess. Due to shortage of developer strength on the team, we have to reprioritize our development focus based on immediate needs that users request (links was an important request the last few months). This feature is currently in our roadmap for the next 3 months and it would be really great if you could add on that ticket the requirements from itwiki or any other language for which namespaces other than the main are important (I can help with this if you like). This will definitely help us evaluate the user requirements and prepare quick implementation plans. At present we are only making quarterly goals to keep a manageable focus. Hope this helps and thank you for very much for your patience and support.--Runa Bhattacharjee 18:18, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
We left a message in all the talk of some selected users. Feedbacks are not great, as predicted, but I didn't promise anything perfect, so people are not pissed off. We "the users" really need to know:
- when the full text translation option will be available, at least in a beta version for English and French;
- if there is any option to insert the blue links directly with the strings at what they're linking.
- if there is any option to save the translations not in ns0, e.g. in User:Sandbox/namepage.--Alexmar983 (talk) 11:08, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, thanks for doing this. I met Erica too at Wikimania and she mentioned this. I think we have answers for 2 of the 3 questions you posted:
- - if there is any option to insert the blue links directly with the strings at what they're linking - this should be available very soon, as soon as next week
- - if there is any option to save the translations not in ns0, e.g. in User:Sandbox/namepage. - If you are asking if page can be saved to a non ns0 space then it is possible, the page title on the second column can be changed to User:Sandbox/namepage. If you are asking if pages not currently in the ns0 can be translated, then the answer is 'not yet'.
- Hope this helps. Thanks.--Runa Bhattacharjee 21:08, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
