About Wikimedia

[edit]
Wikimedia logo

Wikimedia is a global movement whose mission is to bring free, multilingual and educational content of its wiki-based projects to the world. Wikimedia accomplishes its mission through various projects, chapters, and non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Wikimedia supports and promotes twelve projects; Wikipedia being one of the biggest and most popular of them. All projects of Wikimedia are collaboratively developed by users from all around the world.

Getting started

[edit]
Wikimedia technical areas

There are many technical areas in which a newcomer to Wikimedia could get involved (see diagram on the right).

Here are some ways to get started:

  • One of the most recommended options for newcomers looking to contribute code to Wikimedia projects is to follow step-by-step instructions listed in the New Developers guide.
  • If you would like to start small by fixing bugs in our projects, read through Annoying little bugs guide.
  • To get involved in other technical and non-technical areas (such as Documentation, Translation, Support, etc.), read through How to contribute guide.
  • If you would like to get involved in the MediaWiki development, learn How to become a MediaWiki hacker here.
  • If you are interested in working on a Wikimedia project through a three-month long paid internship with support from a mentor, learn more about our outreach programs and how to apply.
