To understand the accompanying text it would be helpful for the users if the map could start with an active Mapnik option. How can this be done?

As far as I understand you want to automatically activate one of the alternative base layers, instead of the default "Wikimedia" one? This is not possible for legal reasons. Each user has to choose and accept the risks involved when connecting to external, non-Wikimedia servers.
