hello am new to this anyone online

Geertivp (talkcontribs)

This activity was 3 weeks ago, on May 9-10; nobody is "there" any more...

how does this work?

RonnieV (talkcontribs)

You could ask questions here, but as the event is over, quicker responses might be received on other locations, depending on your question.

What kind of help are you looking for? If you are interested in getting involved with the wikimedia technical community I would recommend stopping by: How to contribute

Hey,

Will sessions be recorded and uploaded somewhere so people can watch them back?

Thanks!

Rfarrand (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Hello! That will be up to the individual session leaders as there is no single standard for how sessions are being run. :)

I am pretty sure that non of the social event sessions will be recorded.

If there is a sessions that you would like recorded, the best option would be to ask the session leader to do so in advance.

Rfarrand (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Also, this is a good idea! and I will add a note about this in the session scheduling section to suggest that they record. Thanks for the thought

Geertivp (talkcontribs)

I have created a conference subpage with an invitation to post instructional video's, together with some hints.

Albanian-speaking participants?

1
TJones (WMF) (talkcontribs)

My original plans for the Hackathon involved working with Albanian speakers to improve search on Albanian-language wikis (T246964). I looked at the profiles of everyone in UTC+2 time zones, and no one lists Albanian as a language they speak. Are any of the original organizers or other Albanian wiki folks planning to attend?

All times should link to a thing that shows you in your local time. Currently using zonestamp, might fork that and make it a community tool.

Possibly add JS, that automatically shows times in your local time. Will need some work to codify how people's timezone is administrated in the wiki.

Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talkcontribs)

I'd love a user script that would automatically convert a UTC time in my current time :)

TheDJ (talkcontribs)

Just to show how dangerous this brainstorming thing is; I'm now at the stage where that simple script has turned into "i'm gonna build a better meetup.com" in my brain :D

Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talkcontribs)

Weeell I'm actually very interested in having a proper global calendar tool to document community events, so don't ask me twice :D

Multichill (talkcontribs)

My trigger for this was someone pointed out that https://www.worldclock.com/ (or similar site) was full of trackers and other nasty things. Have a nice easy trackerless alternative would be nice.

Rfarrand (WMF) (talkcontribs)

also very interested... the community events team is working on a calendar for all wmf funded events but having links working in people's own timezones would be invaluable. I can think of a million uses. :)

On a similar topic, do we have user page templates for timezones, like we have for languages?

Introduction into the API

1
Hogü-456 (talkcontribs)

Hello, I am instered in an Introduction into the API and how I can use it for querying data. I am mostly active in Wikidata and I know that it is possible to use the haswbstatement so make a search and as far as I know it is only possible to export data of such a search result if using the API. Is it possible to get an Introduction into that while the Hackathon. Who can make such an Intruction. As far as I know there were some introductions and presentations at the last Hackathons. But there I am not sure and I havent attended at a Wikimedia Hackathon before.

Ideas of social events

2
Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talkcontribs)

Hello all,

In this thread, I'd like to collect ideas on how to organize social things during the hackathon. Usually in an IRL event we would go for dinner, have a drink, have a concert or a party, play board games, hang out in a park...

What are activities that we can do online, and will allow us to:

  • relax, take a break
  • connect with people on a more personal level
  • create a common feeling of community

All suggestions are welcome!

Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talkcontribs)

Here are the ideas that were already mentioned here and there:

  • have a "social" channel for non-work related discussions
  • play online games
  • have an audio or video channel were people can hang out
  • have a virtual happy hour
  • have an online concert
  • have a channel to post pictures of your food (bonus: reminds people to take a break and eat)
  • post pictures of cats, plants, or other living-beings in your house
