Usability wiki

[edit]

Hi. This looks great :) I have two questions:

  • Does this include merging all of Usability wiki into mediawiki.org? If it does, yay! If not, why?
  • If not, I see that only the Wikipedia Usability Initiative is listed from the Usability wiki. What is the rationale behind not including the Multimedia Usability Initiative?

@Guillom: Re: Multimedia: I blame my compiling this late at night, for missing the Multimedia links. >.> I've added a link to the hub and an example, for now. Feel free to do anything you like with this page - I was compiling it for everyone to use, in whatever way is best. The incomplete SeeAlsos, and scattered/outdated info, were bugging me ;-) Also, the UX team asked me to compile a comprehensive list.
Re: Merging usabilitywiki all here: Ummm, that sounds like a potentially good idea to me (there are roughly 120 pages in the mainspace and Multimedia: namespaces, plus many talkpages attached to those), but I'm not sure why it wasn't done years ago, and hence would need to investigate that! Do you know? Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 21:26, 28 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Quiddity (WMF): I've dived into my email and bugzilla archives, and couldn't find the previous discussions, so maybe they happened in person; I can't remember :/ I do remember that I've wanted to merge them for years, and I assume that if it wasn't done, it was either because there was a strong opposition, or because it was deemed not worth the work, or a combination of both. Enough water may have gone under the bridge to ask again; it's not a high priority anyway, I just saw your page and thought that if someone was going to consolidate and move pages around, it was worth mentioning :) guillom 09:40, 29 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Accessibility is a key factor for Mediawiki.ui User:MSyed (WMF) and User:MGalloway (WMF) will be working together to include accessibility guidelines and best practices into the Living style guide. Jaredzimmerman (WMF) (talk) 12:42, 6 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Idea for Restructuring

[edit]

For the Hackathon 2022, we are planning a new stab at the documentation. What I have in mind is a restructuring, that doesn't repeat information more than needed and separates the documentation in the three places for different audiences:

  • Editors and Template authors (Wikipedia et al)
  • Developers (mediawiki.org)
  • General audience (Meta Wiki)

Hi @Volker E. (WMF). Sorry for the late reply. I definitely agree that a clear split for devs vs editors would be an ideal next step and goal.
  • For dev-oriented content, I'd suggest centralizing everything at mw:Accessibility guide for developers as that is the existing page with the most incoming links. Plus it's had some active improvements in the last few years.
  • For editor-oriented content, I'd generally suggest that meta-wiki might be the best centralization location, as that covers all the sister projects, and has the most active-translators. Specifically, I'm not sure if it makes more sense to re-purpose the existing top-level page at m:Accessibility (which has barely changed since 2004), or try to create something new... Probably the former, to at least avoid the further-fragmentation and outdated-docs-as-search-results problems? I believe the existing content there could be radically overhauled (as long as nothing of value is discarded), and it hasn't been marked for translation yet which makes things easier in the short-term.
  • For wider-audience content, I'm not sure what that would include aside from the m:Events Team Portal/Accessibility page? But +1 generally!

That makes a lot of sense, thanks @Quiddity (WMF)!
When revisiting the idea of restructuring I was thinking from an additional angle with two more recipients:
  • General audience
  • Designers
  • Developers and
  • Product Managers
Basically a pseudo-checklist for those four groups with somewhat overlapping, definitely interlinking contents. Volker E. (WMF) (talk) 21:14, 11 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
