Onboarding new Wikipedians/Guided tours

From mediawiki.org

This page describes the two guided tours associated with the proposed user experience for onboarding new Wikipedians.

First edit tour (on 'returnto' pages)

[edit]
  1. A pointer to the VisualEditor edit button (where present)
    Title: Ready to edit?
Description: Click the Editbeta button to make your changes.
  2. If sections with edit buttons are present, point to the first one in the article
    Title: Edit just a section
Description: There are edit links for each major section in an article, so you can focus on just that part.
  3. After the user alters the page, we point to the Save button
    Title: You're almost done!
Description: When you're ready, clicking Save page will make your changes visible for everyone.

GettingStarted tour

[edit]

This tour is for users who accept a suggested alternative task, which gives them a random article tagged as needing copy-editing. The steps in this tour are...

  1. A pointer to the article message box (where present) that identifies issues with the page.
Title: Ideas on what to do
Description: These banners are put here by other Wikipedia editors, and identify problems with this article. You don't need to address them all, just stick with what you're comfortable doing.
  2. A pointer to the VisualEditor edit button (where present)
    Title: Ready to edit?
Description: Click the Editbeta button to make your changes.
  3. If sections with edit buttons are present, point to the first one in the article
    Title: Edit just a section
Description: There are edit links for each major section in an article, so you can focus on just that part.
  4. After the user alters the page, we point to the Save button
    Title: You're almost done!
Description: When you're ready, clicking Save page will make your changes visible for everyone.

If VisualEditor is not available

[edit]

Some users, primarily those on blacklisted browsers, will show only the wikitext editor. Instead of pointing to the Editbeta button, either tour will provide the following guiders:

  1. A pointer to the Edit (wikitext) button
    Title: Ready to edit?
Description: Click the Edit button to make your changes.
  2. If sections with edit buttons are present, point to the first one in the article
    Title: Edit just a section
Description: There are edit links for each major section in an article, so you can focus on just that part.
  3. A pointer to the Preview button
    Title: Preview your changes (optional)
Description: Clicking 'Show preview' allows you to check what the page will look like with your changes. Just don't forget to save!
  4. A pointer to the Save button
    Title: You're almost done!
Description: When you're ready, clicking Save page will make your changes visible for everyone.
