Mobile/Strategy

From mediawiki.org

Note: using this space as a draft for the mobile strategy, which includes smartphone work, but not Wikipedia Zero, SMS, and other initiatives.

Strategic Goals

[edit]

The following are the overall mobile targets from the 2012-13 Annual Plan plan. By June 2013:

  1. 4B page views/month
  2. 1,000 mobile photo uploads per month

Note: The page view target will be primarily the responsibility of Wikipedia Zero. So the mobile team working on MobileFrontEnd, iOS and Android features will not be focusing this target.

Although there is no quantitative target for mobile contributions outside photo uploads, the team will experiment with different forms of mobile contributions, as described in the 2012-13 Engineering Goals.

Target Users/Personas

[edit]

Mobile users may be grouped into three rough personas, with Wikipedia as the primary project. Please see Mobile Personas for more information.

  1. Readers: Users who read Wikipedia, whether they are a possible contributor or not. (Rita, Mark, Albert)
  2. New Editors: Users who have just started editing Wikipedia (e.g., have between 1 and 10 edits). (Yasmin, Marie)
  3. Experienced Editors: Users who are experienced at editing Wikipedia (e.g., have over 100 edits). (Arjun)

The New Editors and Experienced Editors personas don't cover the full range of Wikipedia editing activity and aren't meant to. The purpose of the personas is to help the team think through features.

Here is an approximate breakdown of how many users per month fit in each of these groups. Since the numbers of mobile editors is currently negligible, the numbers for web are included:

Web Mobile
Monthly Unique Visitors 450M 45M
New Editors 15K ~
Experienced Editors 10K ~

(Mobile Uniques are not tracked, and are estimated at approximately 10% of total uniques based on page view ratio).
