nobody talk

how effective in talk page ???

nobody talk ?? please let's me know how to make my site effectively look like mediawiki.

Talk pages are pretty effective when the subject of discussion is... the contents of the wiki page itself. For example on this talk page you might say something like "I don't really like the spiders example. It's a bit silly. How can we improve it?". That is an example of a good on-topic discussion to have here.
Now you seem to be asking a question about configuring MediaWiki. Probably this relates to "Skins", so go check out the Manual:Skins page. If you find that manual page unclear, you might leave a comment on Manual talk:Skins. That might be a useful way for you to help us improve our manual.
...however, if you are asking a newbie question about configuring mediawiki then you could head over to the Project:Support desk or look at other Communication alternatives. That is a more effective way of getting help.
Hope that helps

WikiText

Wikitext is difficult to get started with. Any suggestions on practicing? I do not have access to Sandbox yet! Laura trout13:31, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Anonymous users can edit/create only talk pages

Hello

Question: How can I keep anonymous users limited to editing/creating only talk pages?

Answer: With these options:

$wgGroupPermissions['*']['createpage'] = false;
$wgGroupPermissions['*']['editpage'] = false;
$wgGroupPermissions['*']['edittalk'] = true;
$wgGroupPermissions['*']['createtalk'] = true;

Question: and if I don't want the anonymous user to have permission to create a discussion page?

Answer: use this option:

$wgGroupPermissions['*']['createtalk'] = false;

How can I protect all pages with the exception of talk pages from the anonymous user? Maybe auto protect newly created pages?

Set $wgNamespaceProtection variable (in your language) --wargo (talk) 16:15, 25 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
These settings do not seem to work, the anon user is either able to create and edit all pages, or none of the pages. The setting "edittalk" and
"createtalk" has no effect. Does anyone have a solution to this issue? There seem to be endless forum threads asking the same, but no solution.

Try my advice above --wargo (talk) 21:46, 30 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
wargo It is good advice, but when the pages are protected other editors are not able to, well, edit the article pages. My hope was to create a form of discussion pages that anon users visiting the site and reading the articles could go to in order to ask questions or be a part of the conversation. Which means, i could really need a way to make anon user able to _only_ create and edit talk pages. Is this at all possible? Without making changes to the core by adding new namespaces i mean. I would prefer to not do that, as some other posts suggest.
It will not block talk pages for registered if configured properly. --wargo (talk) 16:02, 17 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

People taking oaths...and more

I have just skimmed everything because I am not a techie and do not understand most of it. What I do understand a bit about is people. People who want to do bad things will not mind taking an oath that they have no intentions of adhering to. I think an oath may provide a false sense of security unless there are repercussions for violating the oath.

The reason I am on this site is because when I read about how India shuts down the Internet locally when there are demonstrations in various cities, it occurred to me that something similar could happen here if the circumstances were right. That prompted me to email my kids to ask whether it would be possible for us to start a second type of Internet that could not be controlled in this way. One of my kids pointed me to your site. She told me the basic idea is for people to link to each other locally and that a multitude of these local links would all sooner or later span the globe.

I hope sooner or later you will put some info in a very user-friendly format for people like me who are interested, love using the Internet and don't want to lose access to it, but who are not programmers nor computer engineers.

Thanks! 2601:603:1C80:5650:7D80:7627:737C:DFAB 05:11, 23 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

What about those new talk pages?

Are they still saved as normal pages with Wikitext? Can they be disabled? Is the source code editor still available? --Bachsau (talk) 21:32, 7 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

In MediaWiki installations they are still wikitext unless you install extensions that replaces this. On mediawiki.org we use Structured Discussions but it is possible to make certain talkpage wikitext. wargo (talk) 21:50, 7 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I think there should be some information on this at Help:Talk pages, at least a note what's going on. --Bachsau (talk) 22:02, 7 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Currently there are not plans for replacing wikitext. This help page is universal for default installations so it should reflect MediaWiki software, not mediaiwki.org wargo (talk) 22:05, 7 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
