About this board

What should we call the Notifications panel (dropdown, menu, etc.)?

I see the following definition in the glossary:

Dropdown: The panel is displayed when you click on a badge. That panel contains alerts or notices depending on which badge you have clicked.

Various words have been used by different people for this element: flyout, flyout menu, dropdown, dropdown menu, notification panel. This seems like our chance to, ideally, standardize our term and, minimally, to at least acknowledge that it's called a variety of things. (My own bias: this is not a "menu.")

Here's a list of terms I'd deem acceptable. Vote for your favorite.

Notification panel

Notification dropdown JM

Notification flyout

I've used a definition list for that glossary (that's the only case where we have to use that, btw), and three terms (in bold) are defined:

Panel[1]
Flyout
Dropdown
The panel is displayed when you click on a badge. That panel contains alerts or notices depending on which badge you have clicked.

Which means the design is unclear. I've added commas to try to fix that and I've added a comment to Phab:T129088#2676398

Thanks so much for reminding me of that ticket @Quiddity (WMF). That is what I've been calling it, and now I remember why!

I agree with @Trizek (WMF)'s estimation about the way it's set up now: I did not understand his intention, "Which means the design is unclear." Here is how I'd write this normally; let me know if it would not conform to wiki style somehow:

Notifications Panel (sometimes called the Dropdown or Flyout)

I was going to edit the definition along those lines, but was worried that deleting two numbers in the translation tag sequence would cause a problem. If the formulation above works for you Benoit, can you please update the page? Thanks!

The problem here is accessibility. Using definition lists is accessible the way I did it, not as you suggest. But it's clear that your idea is much more understandable than how we should do that.

Now that I understand Benoit was doing with the various Panel definitions, I see that Collapsed Notifications is handled the same way. In this case, though, there's an additional issue (that actually makes this simpler): I don't think "Collapsed notifications" is the "preferred term" for bundled notifications. Actually, I don't think "collapsed notifications" is a thing at all. When bundled notifications are collapsed, to my mind they're still just bundled notifications.

If we think we need to define "collapsed," I'd suggest putting it in a separate definition, along these lines:

Collapsed versus expanded "Bundled notifications" can be "expanded", to show all the individual messages in the bundle, or "collapsed," to hide them.
