There seems to be a typo in the sentance "...Wikimedia wikis, won't have access to the by default. This page..." Shouldn't there be a word between the "to the [] by"?

KStoller-WMF (talkcontribs)

Thank you for noticing and reporting this!

I've fixed that typo and a few other minor issues.

I'm rather concerned that the mentors themselves are very new users

KStoller-WMF (talkcontribs)

@Kudpung Thanks again for checking out the Growth features!

I know we already answered some of this in the other thread you started, but I just wanted to follow up here too.

A wiki as big as English gets a lot of new accounts and that means a lot of mentors would be needed to handle them all, and so there are definitely considerations about how to manage and monitor all the mentors.  It’s not a little wiki where the mentors all know each other, so there are definitely unique challenges!  We are currently only giving mentorship to 10% of newcomers on English Wikipedia currently, although we may increase this as the Mentor-base increases.

Wikis usually choose to protect their mentor lists so that only people with certain experience levels can sign up.  On English, it’s currently “extended confirmed” protected. The English community has discussed this question about how to regulate mentors: there’s the talk page of the mentor list.  There’s also this thread about making an explicit permission for mentors.

Since that mentor list is public, mentors can keep an eye on who all is signing up to be mentors and notice whether people are signing up who shouldn’t (and mentors can be removed from the list in that case).

The mentee questions are being asked publicly on talk pages, so it's also possible to monitor if newer mentors are providing bad advice.

Does this sound adequate, or do you still have concerns?

Do you have any feedback for how we can further improve the Mentorship program?

Kudpung (talkcontribs)

Thank you Kstoller for your reply. It has more than adequately answered my concerns. I don't have any suggestions hw the Mentorship programme can be improved. It seems to be in the good hands of Wikipedia organisers whom I know well.

Home Page instructions still correct?

Dyork (talkcontribs)

I just learned about the "Suggested Edits" feature and was curious to try it out to see how it would look for a new user. However, I tried to follow the instructions on this page:

To enable the Homepage, go to your user preferences, in the User profile tab. There, check on the "Newcomer homepage" section, for the "Display newcomer homepage" checkbox.

And they did not work. When I went to my user preferences, there was no "Newcomer homepage" section. Is that because I am not a newcomer to Wikipedia? Or did I miss something on the user profile page? If the instructions are different, or if the homepage is not available to experienced users, this text should probably be updated to reflect that.

Trizek (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Maybe you missed the warning at the top of the page? "The following procedure is only applicable to wikis where the Newcomer homepage is available" and English Wikipedia is not (yet) listed there.

You can try these features on French Wikipedia (since you have some knowledge of this language), or on Beta Wikipedia (but less articles are available there).

Let me know if you can't enable the Homepage on these wikis: maybe the how-to is somehow unclear. :)

I have the the same problem as Dyork and no "Suggested Edits" There is a short popup af something and then the message: Ingen foreslåede redigeringer er tilgængelige for øjeblikket. I know from other users that it works on da.wiki. - ~~~~

Trizek (WMF) (talkcontribs)

If you see the message, it means that you have access to Suggested Edits. HAve you selected some task types and topics?

Here is how Suggested Edits work:

Suggested edits are a combination of topics and tasks.

  • Topics are created by identifying articles topics from their Wikidata item.
  • Tasks are found using a set of templates you can find on da:MediaWiki:NewcomerTasks.json.

So we suggest articles that are a combination of both the selected topics and the tasks you'd like to work on. If you only select task types, you get all articles that have the template corresponding to the task type. For instance, you select "Europe" as a topic and "Copyedit" as a task, you will have all articles about Europe that have a template about copyediting. If you add "Expand article",you have articles that are about Europe, and either about copyediting and expanding. If you add "Asia", you will have article either about Europe or Asia, and and either about copyediting and expanding. And so on.

I need to know if you have the possibility to select topics and tasks types. Can you share a screenshot of your Homepage with me if you can?

On my side, whenever I try to select "Expand short articles" ("Udvid korte artikler") on danish Wikipedia, I have a problem. Whatever if I select only this task type, or if I select it with a combination of any other task type, I have zero result ("Ingen forslag fundet"). I tried other tasks combinations, and each time I select "Udvid korte artikler", I have the same error. I tried on two other wikis, and I don't have this issue.

As a consequence, since we rely on templates, it seems that there is a template issue on your wiki for expanding short articles. Let's investigate this!

Nico (talkcontribs)

Yes i have selected some task types and topics, tryed varios combinations, but al with the same result

Trizek (WMF) (talkcontribs)

To be sure: do you still have the problem if you don't select "Udvid korte artikler" (Svær)?

Trizek (WMF) (talkcontribs)
Nico (talkcontribs)

I don't know what you did, but today it works : ''1 af 175 forslag'' . I did nothing since i made the screnshot. ThankYou or who it is :-)

Trizek (WMF) (talkcontribs)

We fixed it! :)

Thank you for reporting it.

Dyork (talkcontribs)

Aha! I completely missed that warning! Thanks for clueing me in to that.

@Trizek (WMF) -- thanks for making this page. I think this only covers desktop use cases. Do you think it should be changed to also include mobile?
