Taking over an old extension

This extension hasn't been updated in a while and there's several things wrong with it:

  • The archive downloads as a .zip but is actually a .7z, so it needs to be renamed before you can unzip it
  • It doesn't work as-is because modern versions of Mediawiki have deprecated the wfLoadExtensionMessages() function. All that is needed to get this extension working is to comment out that line in the WantedPagesFromNS.php file, but that might be scary for inexperienced users.

Is there a process for essentially taking over maintenance of an extension?

See Manual:Developing extensions#Publishing. Since this extension isn't in any official Wikimedia repo, there's no real process; you can just make a new version, publish it somewhere and link to it from the extension page.

If you want to move the code to an official Wikimedia git repo and become the new project owner, you can create a git account and request a new repo for it. That's a bit more work, but makes it less likely that the extension will be neglected in the future.

Or you might want to consider writing a patch to integrate this functionality into MediaWiki core (as part of Special:WantedPages) and submit it to bugzilla. That might actually be the best solution.

Thanks for the report, I didn't know someone actually used it :). Unfortunately I haven't enabled watching of the page, and I didn't know you have posted. It's fixed now (I tried to get the unified account, and I couldn't for a few days, so still posting as unregistered).

FYI the bug has been filed at Bugzilla (multiple times and filed as a duplicate a bunch of times). The main ticket to watch is https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T6204

An aside. It's hard to trace these bugs because Bugzilla merged with Phabricator and whenever something is marked as a duplicate there's no link and the bug number is different from the ticket number (I had to look this up at Phabricator/versus Bugzilla#Missing data to figure it out).

The linked zip archive throws errors when I try to open it in various programs: "The archive is either in unknown format or damaged" "Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive." Pjrich (talk) 19:01, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

The archive is a 7zip archive. It should be named .7z. It does not appear to work as of 1.20.2 anyway.
