Collection assessment template

From mediawiki.org

This page contains a set of columns you can paste into a spreadsheet or use in your tracking tool of choice while following the Documentation Collection audit process.

Survey

[edit]

In Step 2, you populate your spreadsheet or tracking mechanism with pages or docs. For that step, you only need a doc identifier (usually URL).

Prioritize

[edit]

Data points for Step 3.

Prioritize Prioritize Prioritize
Relevance: is this page clearly part of the collection of docs in scope for your team/project, or is it out of scope? Use Special:WhatLinksHere to assess the page's incoming links and redirects. Determine ranges that make sense for grouping your content into a few buckets like "many links", "some links", "few links". Pageviews in last year: many, some, few, none?

Assess

Data points for Step 4.

Information overload

[edit]
Info overload: Audience focus Info overload: Audience focus Info overload: Content duplication Info overload: Content duplication Info overload: Too much content Info overload: Too much content
Intended audience Is all content on the page appropriate for the intended audience? (yes/no) Is some of the content covered elsewhere? Check this by doing some searches across multiple wikis (wikitech, meta, mediawiki) and our open source docs at https://doc.wikimedia.org/, and Github/Gerrit/Gitlab. Is your impression that the duplicate content be included in OR removed from your docs? (Don't overthink it at this point.) Page length Link overload

Information gaps

[edit]
Info gaps: Content freshness Info gaps: Content freshness Info gaps: Missing content
At first glance, how correct and accurate is the content on a scale of 1 (fresh) to 5 (completely outdated). Note: last revision date doesn't correlate directly with freshness. If score is 3 or above, is your first instinct that most of the content should be: deleted OR updated? (Again, don't overthink this, just give your initial reaction.) Review for missing features, Talk page questions, coverage of prerequisite knowledge, and essential contact info.
